a trip to the bush

I had the amazing opportunity to spend nine days in Olifants River Game Reserve in Limpopo Province, South Africa with some awesome people. Here’s the proof.

Fantastic Frank

Fantastic Frank – an amazingly on-the-ball real estate agency in Sweden has just taken the cake for most impressive everything. They find beautiful spaces, take beautiful photos of the most influential furniture which is all curated by a home staging company. They seem to really capture the essence of the spaces they list, making sure that every square inch is furnished to speak to the right people. I’m drooling over here.

Beach Illustrations

Beach Illustrations

Here are a few illustrations I made at my second and last day of work. The idea was to create icons that represented the holidays for a Christmas catalogue (still can’t get used to the reversed seasons!)

Andre’s Farm

Alright so there’s this farm nestled in the outskirts of Cape Town close to Tamboerskloof. Upon arrival, one is greeted by the South African Police Force’s Mounted Unit stables. They are leasing out a bit of land for their horses from Andre’s Farm, a hidden gem that has hosted pigs, sheep, chickens, dogs, and foster children for decades. Confused and intrigued, I walked around and snapped a few photos, trying to figure out exactly what this place was doing here. If you are in the area and feeling like seeing something different, stop by, explore, and chat to the residents of the farm.

A Street Talk Episode about the farm.

Teaching myself to paint

Intimidating and beautiful, watercolor has recently caught my attention. I’ve been perusing a few watercolor sketchbooks online and wanted to give the fussy yet maleable medium a try. Here are my first, second, and third attempts. Bear with me, I am a true beginner.

Spring in the city

Hey world,

Still over here in South Africa, living the dream. The weather is getting warm, the days are getting longer, and the people are smiling. Here are some photos, courtesy of Tom, all film & all pretty great.

Aside

So much has happened in the last month.  While trying to set up shop in a far away land presents its struggles, the opportunity for learning and doing is absurd.  I’ve kept a very short day-to-day record of the happenings; it’s amazing how much of the little stuff I tend to forget so I’ve found it nice to have a place to dump the day.

Some highlights starting in late September.

(twenty second)

Moz Logo Struggles. Red & Yellow visit with Paula. Quite cool and Unpretent. Tom made chicken curry. I’m staying here.

(twenty forth)

Kelly’s going away @ Trill. Too loud, too messy, too smokey but full of great people.

(twenty fifth)

Wrecked and the place is too. Clarke’s for breakfast. Said bye to Kelly with Jessi. Mellow recovery night.

(thirty first)

Breakfast at Clarke’s. Wine tasting at Eagle’s Nest with VACorps. Little Dragon @ OBM. Hotel bar in Woodstock?

(first)

Clarke’s again. Haircut from hell but good. Woolworth’s. Voice is gone.

(sixth)

Hike down Table.  Sweet nectar beers at Constantia Nek. Exhausted lunch at Royale. Wine with Paula at Gypsy Cafe. Are spring rolls Argentinian?

(twelfth)

SLSJ program. Pork stew. Two bottles of wine…oops.

Okay so I’ve been up to a little more than this.  In addition to the work I’m doing for VACorps, I’ve managed to add in a little more – a banner for Rent-A-Room, wedding invitations, a seminar program, as well as a few new exciting projects in the works right now.  Proper examples will be added to my online portfolio soonish.
